The vitamin D receptor belongs to family of transcriptional regulator factors and has a similar sequence to the thyroid hormone receptor. The main targets this receptor are the genes of bone metabolism, although it could regulate other metabolic genes, as the immune system genes. Specific mutations on this gene are associated with the prevalence of osteoporosis and other bone diseases.
